Don’t You Automatically Have a Writing Voice?

To some extent, voice is a result of talent rather than acquired skill; even in humdrum communications such as email, some people have a knack for imbuing their words with vitality, a flair for engaging with the reader.

The beginning writer, however, needs a growth mindset. Though someone may have a propensity for language that exhibits itself very early on, no one is born with the skill of setting words down on paper or screen with a powerful voice. That is a result of craftsmanship. Some people may develop proficiency more easily than others based on innate ability. However, beginning writers must remember that experienced writers make it look easy precisely because they have been exercising the skill every day for years. Just as a pro soccer player practises their nimble footwork, so the professional writer develops a voice through hours of hard writing work.

Part of your writing voice will flow from who you are: your personality, background, values, and beliefs. But you need to actively practise showing your individuality effectively on the page. We have all heard speakers who sounded dull or awkward, or inauthentically enthusiastic. So, too, writers’ voices can be boring, uncomfortable, or contrived. Writers need to develop and control their voices. They cultivate voice as they develop their skills.
